Life Sciences Course Descriptions
The Definition of IAI GECC Physical and Life Sciences
Specific course descriptions: IAI GECC Physical Sciences
| L - Following the number designates laboratory courses. |
L1 900: General Education Biology (3-5 semester credits)
A course emphasizing scientific inquiry through selected
concepts of biology, such as organization, function, heredity, evolution
and ecology. Biological issues with personal and social implications will
be introduced to enable students to make informed decisions. Policies on acceptance of AP credit vary among academic
programs and from institution to institution, so AP credit toward the GECC
or major requirements is not guaranteed. In general, a score of 3 or higher
on the AP Biology exam may be considered as equivalent to successful
completion of courses approved for L1 900L.

such as organization, function, heredity, evolution and ecology, using
microbes as the type of organism. Topics may include a survey of micro-organisms,
the role of micro-organisms in health and disease, ecological and economic
roles of microbes and the role of micro-organisms in biotechnology.

L1 904: Human Biology (3-5 semester credits)
Examines practical aspects of selected concepts in biology and their
application to technology. Concepts may include heredity, growth, development,
health and ecology. Human systems may be studied as they relate to the
major topics. Emphasis will be placed on the relationship of the issues
to the individual and society.

Examines the origin of life and its diversification from a scientific
perspective, including the impact of evolution on human thought.
L1 907L: Evolution (3-5 semester credits)
A laboratory course that examines the origin of life and its diversification from a scientific
perspective, including the impact of evolution on human thought.
LP 900: Interdisciplinary Physical and Life Science (3-5 semester credits)
Interdisciplinary courses that include topics from both Physical and Life Science disciplines. Students must also take a course coded LP 901 or 901L to satisfy general education requirements.
Interdisciplinary science courses are those that integrate two or more disciplines in both the physical and life sciences. These courses should make explicit the relationship between the disciplines being covered and strike a balance between physical and life science. Textbooks and reading should incorporate perspectives from the various disciplines. Team teaching is encouraged in order to help students gain an understanding of the methodology and perspectives of two or more physical and life sciences. In order to ensure that there is a balance between the two areas of science for general education, students should take the sequence of courses prior to transfer. The two courses may or may not be sequential.
LP 900L: Interdisciplinary Physical and Life Science Lab (3-5 semester credits)
Interdisciplinary laboratory courses that include topics from both Physical and Life Science disciplines. Students must also take a course coded LP 901 or 901L to satisfy general education requirements.
