Communication: IAI GECC Definition

Communication is the art of expressing and exchanging ideas in speech or writing. The complexities of modern life demand that individuals have a mastery of both oral and written communication skills. Therefore, the Illinois Transferable General Education Core Curriculum (IAI Gen. Ed.) requires competency in both skills. To fulfill the requirement, students should satisfactorily complete two, three semester credit hour sequenced courses in written communication, and one, three semester credit hour course in oral communication. Effective with freshman entering in the summer of 1999 and beyond, satisfactory completion of the writing courses will mean a grade of C or better.

Because communication skills provide a foundation for success in later academic work, general education communication courses should be completed early in a student's degree program, and communication skills should continue to be developed and refined across the undergraduate curriculum.
